1Password Slow in Chrome on Mac? Check This Before Reinstalling

1Password taking ages to open in Chrome on your Mac? Check the browser fix, a DevTools setting and your Chrome profile before reinstalling the extension.

You click the 1Password icon in Chrome and wait. The login page is ready. Your password manager is apparently still thinking about it.

If that sounds familiar, start by updating Chrome and fully restarting it. Then check whether another extension's popup is slow too. That comparison is worth making before you remove anything: 1Password has acknowledged a Chromium problem affecting extension popups, including its own. 1Password's support thread

Check the dates on any workaround you find. Advice posted before the September fix may no longer fit the problem you are seeing.

What happened to the Chrome extension bug?

The Chromium report describes extension popups taking between 2 and 60 seconds to open on macOS. Its reproduction used a minimal extension, which helped establish that the problem extended beyond a particular password manager.

Developers rolled out a change in September and marked the major macOS regression fixed on September 28. On October 1, they reopened the issue to track remaining popup delays more broadly. The reopened status does not mean that the earlier fix was withdrawn. Chromium issue 549552319

So if the delay survives an update and restart, it is worth investigating your specific symptoms instead of assuming that everyone is still waiting for the same fix.

Update Chrome, then actually quit it

In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and go to Help > About Google Chrome. Let Chrome check for an update, then use Relaunch if it appears. Google's instructions make the restart part of applying the update. Update Google Chrome

If Chrome already reports that it is up to date, save anything you are editing and use Chrome > Quit Google Chrome, or Command-Q, then open it again. Closing a tab is not the same test.

Check the 1Password extension version as well. Chrome normally updates extensions automatically; you can find the installed version under Extensions > Manage Extensions > 1Password > Details. If you also use the desktop app, check that it is current. Extension updates, desktop app updates

Now try the action that was failing. If the pause usually happens after Chrome has been idle, give it that chance to fail again. Opening the popup five times immediately after a restart answers a narrower question.

I would also note the installed versions before changing another setting. It is easy to lose track once a browser update, an extension update and a restart have all happened in the same afternoon.

Check another extension before blaming the vault

Open a different extension's popup in the same Chrome profile. Use one you already have; there is no need to install a random extension for this.

1Password's support team specifically recommends this comparison. If other third-party extensions hesitate too, that supports investigating the browser. If only 1Password is affected, the team recommends contacting support so they can examine that case. The support team's diagnostic advice

Be specific about where the wait occurs:

| What you observe | What to investigate next |
| --- | --- |
| Several extension popups open slowly | Chrome and the shared browser environment |
| Only the 1Password popup is slow | Its settings, desktop connection and diagnostics |
| The popup opens promptly, but filling fails on one site | The affected page and the filling action |
| The desktop app also takes a long time to respond | Include the app's behavior in your support report |

A working desktop app helps narrow the report, though it cannot tell you by itself why the browser popup stalls. Keep that uncertainty in your notes.

If you use DevTools, check “Update on Reload”

This is the setting I would check early on a development machine.

1Password documents a separate problem with Chrome DevTools' Update on Reload option for service workers. It can cause a slow or empty popup, or stop the menu in form fields from working.

Open DevTools with Command-Option-I, then go to Application > Service Workers. If Update on Reload is checked, turn it off, close DevTools and try 1Password again. If you need that option for development, 1Password suggests using a separate Chrome profile for the extension. 1Password's browser troubleshooting guide

You may never have enabled it. In that case, leave it alone and move on. There is no value in changing unrelated DevTools settings just because the panel is open.

The same guide treats an “Oops, something went wrong while loading” message separately: update the extension, and if you previously disabled desktop integration, enable Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app under Settings > General, then restart the browser. Record the exact error rather than reducing everything to “slow.” Loading-error instructions

Try a separate Chrome profile if the delay remains

You can test 1Password in a separate profile without dismantling your everyday setup.

Chrome lets you add another profile through the profile button, then Add Chrome profile. Profiles keep their settings and browsing data separate. Google's guide to Chrome profiles

For this check, skip Google sync and install only the official 1Password extension. You will need to sign in to 1Password there. Keep your existing profile intact.

Try the same login page and the same sequence that normally produces the delay. A fresh profile that responds quickly gives you a reason to inspect differences in the original profile. It does not identify which setting or extension is responsible. If both profiles pause, that result is useful too.

Change one thing between attempts and keep a short note of the result. Otherwise, a successful attempt leaves you guessing what helped, and a failed attempt leaves you guessing what to undo.

Get the login you need, then send a useful report

If the desktop app works and you need to get back to work, 1Password 8 has Quick Access. On Mac, right-click its menu bar icon and choose Open Quick Access, then search for the item you need. Using Quick Access

For a persistent browser problem, generate the extension's diagnostic report: right-click the 1Password toolbar icon, open Settings > Help, and choose Generate report. Send it privately to 1Password support. Diagnostic report instructions

Include your Chrome, macOS and extension versions, whether the desktop app responds normally, and whether another extension's popup also pauses. Mention any pattern you can reproduce, such as the first click after several minutes of inactivity. Add the result from the separate profile if you tried it.

If you eventually reinstall the extension, keep those notes. You will have a specific failure to retest: the first click after idle, the empty popup, or the login form that never fills. Without that detail, it is hard to tell whether anything changed.
